چکیده

It is well known that taste buds are dependent on an intact nerve supply, and when experimentally denervated they degenerate and disappear (von Vintschgau & Honigschmied, 1877; von Vintschgau, 1880; Griffini, 1887; Meyer, 1897; Olmsted, 1920a, b, 1921, 1922; May, 1925; Whiteside, 1927; Torrey, 1934, 1936; Wagner, 1953; Guth, 1957, 1958, 1963; Beidler, 1962, 1963). Olmsted (19206) has suggested that the degenerating taste bud cells are cleared away by macrophages invading the epithelium; Guth (1957, 1958, 1963) has demonstrated sloughing of degenerating taste buds from the epithelial surface, and others believe that taste bud cells dedifferentiate to become lining epithelium (Meyer, 1897; Wagner, 1953). Because of this disagreement and because recent evidence for cell turnover in taste buds has indicated that cell death and replacement is a normal occurrence (Beidler, 1962, 1963; DeLorenzo, 1963; Beidler & Smallman, 1965), it is pertinent to study the fine structure of degenerating taste buds in the hope of elucidating the process by which taste bud cells and nerve terminals degenerate.

Fine structure of degenerating tast buds after denervation.

Ultrastructural and histochemical changes in the frog taste organ following denervation.

The fine structure of the taste organ in the Rana catesbeiana was observed by light and electron microscopy. The taste organ consists of three distinct cell types, the taste, supporting and basal cells as well as nerve elements. The present findings suggest that the taste cell might function not only as a chemoreceptor cell, but also as a paracrine cell. The basal cell also may have a dual func...

The nerve-dependency of gene expression in mouse taste bud was examined through an analysis of changes in gene expression in and around the taste buds in circumvallate papillae after surgery of cranial nerve IXth

The nerve-dependency of gene expression in mouse taste bud was examined through an analysis of changes in gene expression in and around the taste buds in circumvallate papillae after surgery of cranial nerve IXth (glossopharyngeal nerve). The number of cells expressing T1r3, gustducin, Mash1 and Nkx2.2 gradually decreased after denervation. However, the expression intensity of these genes was b...

Fungiform taste bud degeneration in C57BL/6J mice following chorda-lingual nerve transection.

Taste buds are dependent on innervation for normal morphology and function. Fungiform taste bud degeneration after chorda tympani nerve injury has been well documented in rats, hamsters, and gerbils. The current study examines fungiform taste bud distribution and structure in adult C57BL/6J mice from both intact taste systems and after unilateral chorda-lingual nerve transection. Fungiform tast...

Histochemical changes and apoptosis in degenerating taste buds of the rat circumvallate papilla.

The present study was designed to examine the histochemical changes and occurrence of apoptosis in taste buds of rat circumvallate papillae following bilateral transection of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Following transection of the glossopharyngeal nerve, the number of taste buds was not altered until post-operative day 3 (PO3), but decreased significantly thereafter. The number of cells within...
